Myofunctional Therapy
What is Myofunctional Therapy?
Myofunctional Therapy can be defined as physical therapy used to correct improper functions of the tongue and facial muscles.
Myofunctional disorders may include: mouth breathing, snoring, atypical swallowing patterns(tongue thrust), restricted tethered oral tissues(tongue/lip ties), lip incompetence(lips apart) and oral habits(thumb sucking/nail biting).
Myofunctional Therapy involves exercises designed to strengthen the tongue and orofacial muscles to achieve proper tongue placement, breathing, speaking, chewing, swallowing and facial development.
When orofacial muscles rest and function in the proper way, we can see improvements in breathing, eating, swallowing, and quality of sleep.
